pacha – ‘Pachamama or Pacha is the conceptual construct that links humans and the universe. Pacha means universe, and cosmos, origin or precedence, and it also means both time and place. It possesses material and spiritual attributes. Pacha is represented by the earth and it plays a central role in Andean rituals. It symbolizes the creative forces of nature and it is honored collectively during a diversity of occasions related to the agrarian cycle and communities’ social life. It is also honored and remembered assiduously as part of the activities of daily life. Time and space, material, and spiritual sustenance are blended within the unifying concept of Pacha. Pacha encloses the clue for understanding the Andean health and illness belief system. The earth is both a source of healing and of illness. Health in the Andes is the maintenance of a state of harmony with nature and the universe. The universe is in constant motion and there is a constant interplay of the forces of good and evil (hampi, laija), thus illness is manifested as a shattering of the unity of body and spirit, that must be restituted to gain health.’ – Alderete
pachacuti – We live in a time of the fulfillment of an ancient Inca prophecy. This is the time of the new Pachacuti, a great change bringing with it a new relating to the Earth (Pachamama). Each Pachacuti is a era of time about 500 years. The last Pachacuti occurred with the Conquest in the early 16th century, and the Q’ero (Inca) priests have been waiting ever since for the next era, when order would start to emerge from chaos. The current Pachacuti refers to the end of time as we understand it, the end or death of a way of thinking and a way of being. A new relationship with the living Earth, and an emergence into a golden age of peace. There are many indications that changes in human consciousness are taking place, yet there is still a long way to go. (thatz for sure) – http://www.shamanism.co.uk/introw.htm 2) Pacha means “earth” or “time,” and cuti means “to set things right.” For 500 years the Q’ero elders have preserved a sacred prophecy of a great change, or “pachacuti,” in which the world would be turned right-side-up, harmony and order would be restored, and chaos and disorder ended. The Q’ero are releasing their teachings to the West, in preparation for the day the Eagle of the North and the Condor of the South (the Americas) fly together again. They believe that “munay,” love and compassion, will be the guiding force of this great gathering of the peoples. “The new caretakers of the Earth will come from the West, and those that have made the greatest impact on Mother Earth now have the moral responsibility to remake their relationship with Her, after remaking themselves,” said Don Antonio Morales, a master Q’ero shaman. The prophecy holds that, North America will supply the physical strength, or body, Europe will supply the mental aspect, or head and the heart will be supplied by South America. When the Spanish conquered the Incas 500 years ago, the last pachacuti, or great change, occurred. The Q’ero have been waiting ever since for the next pachacuti, when order would emerge out of chaos.- http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/profecias/esp_profecias_inca.htm 3) prophecies of the pachacucha. It’s when the eagle from the north will be flying together with the condor from the south. The condor from the south will be sharing wisdom and the eagle from the north is going to be sharing power. Those two sacred birds are going to be flying together, and that’s what’s happening today.
pain – completes itself in the act of being felt. 2) pain is perception ~Pleiadians 2) all pain is resistance to the natural self. resistance come from defintions of who you are that are out of alignment with your true self. . pain is resistance . no longer resistance, no pain. . ~ Bashar

paleomentation – ‘Refers to two types of mentation: protomentations (reptilian brain), which provides the basis for propensions – drives, impulses, compulsions, and obsessions; and emotiomentations (limbic system and assoc. structures), which is a form of cerebration that appears to influence behavior on the basis of information subjectively manifested as emotional feelings. – MacLean, 1990 ‘The Triune Brain in Evolution’
Panacea – Panacea (‘heal-all’ or ‘universal cure’) is a herb that is supposed to heal all ailments. In ancient Greece she was personified as a minor Greek goddess who symbolizes the power of healing through herbs. She is said to be one of the daughters (or sister) of Asclepius and Epione. – http://www.pantheon.org/mythica/articles/p/panacea.html
Pandoras box – You have opened a ‘Pandora’s Box’ that has been stored deep within your psyche for thousands and thousands of years. It contains all your core issues and beliefs about self-love, lack and limitations about your worthiness of love, joy, peace, abundance and vibrant health, as well as your feelings about aging and the continuity of life. All these out-moded beliefs which do not serve your higher good are roiling up into your consciousness so they can be released and re-qualified into a higher frequency of Light substance. – Archangel Michael
panhuman reservoir – ‘These resurgences were remarkably akin to those erratic wellings up of sociosensual inclination I saw when collapsed preconquest communities began restabilizing in a postconquest mode. They leaked out spontaneously and unpredictably as if from some panhuman reservoir so deep it could neither be undone by existential terror nor seduced by worldly thoughts of ownership and power.’ E. Richard Sorenson
paradigmatic dissonance – ‘The involvement of science and industry with the grassroots herbal movement, while offering greater validity and mainstream acceptance, is complicated with deepening confusion – paradigmatic dissonance – Michael Tierra. Standardized herbal extracts: are they always necessary? 1999.
Paradise – the Persian word for Garden. 2) “Many people are taken by the belief that paradise is in some place other than here. They believe they will meet up with the Divine some time in the future, or perhaps after they leave their bodies. This is a belief created by the human mind, and which was widely propagated by horizontal religions. At the same time, the truth that ‘God lives in your heart’ has become cliché, and there is a part of you that just doesn’t buy it. Paradise is the inner encounter with God, and it is true that God dwells in your heart. Thus, paradise is here and now. That’s the crux of it: we have to overcome the clouds of forgetfulness and remove the layers that cover up the heart, so as to at last overcome suffering. For that, you need practice and knowledge, acquired by studying yourself, which in turn allows comprehension to emerge. Comprehension allows you to transcend suffering.” – Sri Prem Baba
Paradox – The distance between soul and ego creates paradox. They manage it, with the ego often setting intention and the soul putting you on the road to get there. 2) our own compound individuality, e.g. ~ If we don’t wake up to unity, we can never discover our own individuality, our unique expression in the universe, or ‘when you come to the All, you must possess it without wanting anything’.- St John of the Cross
Paramita – means going to the other shore. It is called this because these actions are like a raft, that carry us across the river of samsara. Also called transcendent actions, because they go beyond virtue and nonvirtue, going beyond the dualistic views all together, and they develop a flexible mind. – Pema Chodron
parasympathetic – the parasympathetic system is concerned with the conservation and restoration of energy rather than energy expenditure. This system stimulates gastrointestinal movements, lowers blood pressure and slows heart rate, and empties bladder and bowels. The primary neurotransmitter is acetylcholine. Antagonism of two systems: norepinephrine liberated by sympathetic dilates pupils, acetylcholine liberated by parasympathetic constricts pupils. An opthalamist can dilate pupils by either stimulating norepinephrine receptors or blocking acetylcholine receptors. Parasympathetic acetylcholine is critical for erection of the penis and clitoris, but sympathetic norepinephrine is required for ejaculation.
parents – when living, the buffer zone betwen you and eternity, because when they die, you’re next in line . . . – M. Stillwater
parivartan ~ 1) means change, transition, transformation. 2) “It is a change in the frequency of light on this planet. This change allows an amplification of perception. Suffering is due to limited perception. The veil of illusion that generates domination through fear and pain is maintained due to this limited perception. One of the characteristics of this period is the breaking down of the walls that we often believe to be our house. This may generate despair. Some may lose their minds, because this deconstruction is intensely accelerated. If you are very attached to something you may experience moments of spiritual emergence. After a while you will notice that what fell were the walls of a prison. It was precisely these walls that had been stopping you from experiencing freedom.” ~ Prem Baba
parousia – is a Greek word used 24 times in the New Testament to mean “coming, arrival, personal presence”. It is most often used to indicate the second coming and the arrival of the Son of Man though it can also indicate a visit by a Christian worker, apostle or even the “man of lawlessness” . In the Greek world of the New Testament it meant among other things a) A State visit or b) The presence or appearance of a deity during worship e.g by divine fire. It has a range of meaning to that of the archaic English word “visitation”. –Dr Wesley B Rose.
parrots – flying dolphins.
passive volition – . . . meditation designed to create passive volition.
pastoralists – domesticated hunters, who could/can easily transform themselves into warriors, hunting and killing people instead of wild animals, thus dominating and enslaving other people, just as they controlled herds of animals. – after R. Sheldrake – Rebirth of Nature – p. 18.
patho-adolescence – ‘There’s absolutely nothing wrong with (healthy) adolescence, but our cultural resources have been so degraded over the centuries that the majority of humans in “developed” societies now never reach true adulthood. An adolescent world, being unnatural and unbalanced, inevitably spawns a variety of cultural pathologies, resulting in contemporary societies that are materialistic, greed-based, class-stratified, hostilely competitive, violent, racist, sexist, ageist, and ultimately self-destructive. These societal symptoms of patho-adolescence, which we see everywhere in the industrialized world today, are not at the root of our human nature, but rather are an effect of egocentrism on our humanity. Egocentrism is living as if we are agents only for our individual selves and families and not primarily members of the more-than-human world. . . . As soon as enough people in contemporary societies progress beyond adolescence, the entire consumer-driven economy and egocentric lifestyle will implode. Adolescent society is actually quite unstable due its incongruence with the primary patterns of living systems. Industrial Growth Society is simply incompatible with collective human maturity. No true adult wants to be a consumer, worker bee, or tycoon, or a soldier in an imperial war, and none would go through these motions if there were other options at hand. The enlivened soul and wild nature are deadly to industrial-growth economies — and vice versa.’ –Bill Plotkin
pathology – ‘. . . Yes, it’s the unconscious power of the myth (of progress). But then, that’s what pathology is. It’s a distorted energy that takes control of us. People in the grip of an unconscious drive have no independent inner energy to act on their own. They are submissive to whatever forces are acting upon them, as we’re submissive to all the advertising that controls us. We don’t have the power to overcome the activation of our energies that is produced by advertising, so we spend, spend, spend—and collect an infinite number of things that ultimately are burdensome, rather than fulfilling.’ – Thomas Berry (Forsaken Garden)
patriarchy– 1) Value- hierarchical (up-down thinking), value dualisms (either-or thinking), ‘Power-over’ conceptions of power, conceptions of privilege, logic of domination. – Karen Warren 6) Patriarchy is an aberration of the male energy, which hurts men as much as it hurts women. – Deborah Frances
peace – Peace is power, which means we are in right relationship not only to our inner nature, but to the energies of Earth and Cosmos, even to their more troubling aspects of chaos and uncertainty. This requires faith of a kind which can only come to us from a desire for justice for the entire Earth Community. – K. Lauren de Boer 2) peace begins on our plate 3) finding the inner voice to make the decisions to live consciously 4) world peace comes when MAC — mutually assured connectivity — has replaced the MAD — mutually assured destruction 4) If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. ~Mother Teresa 5) “It is not all of life to live, nor yet all of death to die. For life and death are one, and only those who will consider the experience as one may come to understand or comprehend what peace indeed means.” – Edgar Cayce 5) Peace is born in silence ~ Arcturians
peasant – Prior to the rise of feudalism, it is fair to state that most of the agricultural people of Europe were local tribesmen of various kinds. Feudalism imposed the concept of sovereign, dictatorial rulers whose rule was imposed by military might, and gave rise to true European peasantry. The crystallization of centralized executive power serves to separate civilized societies from primitive societies. It is immaterial whether such controls are located in a feudal castle or in the executive offices of the capitols of nation states. The appearance of the hierarchical state marks the transition of food cultivators in general to the more specific definition contained in the concepts of peasantry. When the cultivator becomes dependent upon and integrated in a society in which he is subject to demands of people who are defined by a class other than his own, he becomes appropriately termed a peasant. – Eric Wolf 2) “A peasant is not a member of a true community of people. His society is incomplete without the town or city. It is trade with the town or city, an economic relationship, which defines the early stages of peasantry. As trade becomes more necessary, for whatever reasons, the tribesman becomes increasingly less of a tribesman and more of a peasant. The process is neither immediate nor is it necessarily absolute, but to the degree that a tribesman becomes dependent, he becomes less of a tribesman.” – Kroeber (1948:284)
Perceptual markers~ are a term the Hathors use to describe how we make sense of our world and navigate through our lives using our five senses.~ Tom Kenyon
perceptual threshold – ‘In addition to factors related to the brew and to the patient, there are other external factors which powerfully affect the results of an ayahuasca session. These belong in one of two phases: perception by the senses, and later, integration at the core level. In the first phase, perceptions by the five senses become manifest. Depending on their intensity, frequency, and origin, their stimulus may or may not surpass the perceptual threshold of the individual.’ – (Mabit et al, 1995, pg. 268)
Perek Shira – ‘A Wild Earth Torah’ — Explore Judaism’s tradition encouraging us to listen to the song of the Earth. Our primary guide will be Perek Shira (Chapter of Song), an ancient Hebrew text that ascribes Torah verses to natural phenomena, plants and creatures. Within every drop of water, tree, or ant there is a connection to all beings, and ultimately to the Divine. Engage in hands-on activities, mediations, singing, discussion, laughter, and some text study, culminating in a field trip (location TBA) to gauge the impact of these ancient teachings on our sensitivity to the natural world and our sense of responsibility to the Earth. perennial philosophy – from the human desire for authenticity, uniqueness, transcendence, and for a meaningful existence: perennial philosophy includes reflections on pursuing truth, universal wisdom, and mystical unity. According to the philosopher Marsilio Ficino, founder of the Platonic Academy of Florence, it links into the occult wisdom of Pythagoras, the Orphic mysteries, Hermes Trismegistus, and Zoroaster – head of the magi. the conception of perennial philosophy is an outgrowth of the Neoplatonic interest in the prisca theologia and of the attempt to produce harmony from discord, unity from multiplicity. H. Wautischer. 2) The perennial philosophy was known of for some time , and at its heart are four statements about the nature of reality: The first is that this physical world we live in and see and touch is not all there is to reality; that underneath it—in fact, at its source—is another world, a sacred world, a world of spirit or consciousness or Mind with a capital ‘M’, or Geist , or Tao. The second of the four claims is that we as human beings partake of this reality. We are rather like amphibians. We have a part of our life and being in this world we see and touch, but in a deeper part at the core of our being, at the center of our minds, at the center of our awareness, we experience this other sacred realm, and we partake of it, and we are it. The third claim of the perennial philosophy has to do with epistemology: It states that we are capable ofknowing this other realm. If we train and develop the mind sufficiently, if we hone our awareness, develop our attention, refine our perception, then we can come to know this reality directly for ourselves. This is what differentiates the perennial philosophy from dogma. It is not a truth-claim to be believed simply on someone’s word. It is an experiment that is offered to us, that each and every one of us can try. The fourth claim is an ethic. It states that coming to know this sacred realm and coming to recognize it as ourselves is the highest good and the highest goal of human existence—that it is the means by which we can best serve ourselves and others. – Roger Walsh 3)There are some spiritual practices that are very difficult for the mind to understand, especially when they are in line with a culture that is different than yours. But the essence of all these practices lies beyond culture. The essence is what we commonly call ‘God,’ the creative intelligence that we also call ‘life.’ Without this power acting in our bodies, we can’t even blink an eye. There are many ways to invoke this power, which lies inside and outside, in all places. One of these ways is through the various Vedic rituals. For a long time these rights remained safe-guarded, so that only Hindu priests were allowed to perform them. But the essence of these practices does not belong to Hinduism: it is a universal heritage.” – Prem Baba
performative contradiction – Before he can proceed with developing his theory, Wilber needs to rehabilitate the concept of hierarchy, a concept central to his theory and that of many other evolutionary researchers. Hierarchy has become somewhat of a dirty word in some circles and critics claim that all hierarchy necessitates ranking or dominating that oppresses, marginalizes or destroys. It is not uncommon to hear that we need to do away with all hierarchies. However, as Wilber points out, this is not only impossible but an example of what philosophers call ‘performative contradiction’ since the preference for nonhierarchies over hierarchies is itself a hierarchical value judgment. Qualitative distinctions are an inevitable part of human experience – Roger Walsh
permaculture – . . is about design. It involves designing and implementing a plan for a piece of land in order to come up with the most efficient way to sustain ourselves and the community around us in food, fibres and energy. In this endeavor, we use a series of principles that can be applied at any scale and in any climate. We also use different techniques coming from sources like organic farming and sustainable agriculture. – http://www.life.ca/nl/37/permaculture.html 2) Permaculture is a design science for creating sustainable human habitats and societies. Working with nature to
create beautiful, productive, healthy ecosystems. Building symbiotic relationships between flora and fauna as well as within human societies. – Michael Pilarski
personality – 1) the pop culture of the body. – mb. 2) ‘True personality is always a vocation and puts its trust in it as in a God. . . . vocation acts like a law of God from which there is no escape. He must obey his own laws, as if it were a daemon, whispering to him of new and wonderful paths. Anyone with a vocation hears the voice of the inner man: he is called.’ Jung. Development of Personality, 175-176. 3) ‘personality and character are not the soul, they are the order and organization of the soul. –nature (small wright)
perspective – is everything
peyote – When Kauyumari, the Blue Deer Spirit, first came to this world there was nothing. No sound, no birds, no people, nor wind nor sun, nor rain. Kauyumari had a dream in which he rose to the sky and saw that it was empty. So he began to form the creatures of the earth and of the sky. The child who reigned in Watepuapa, this child became the peyote and then disappeared in a place that has become sacred. The peyote is the collective memory that Kauyumari is working from to slowly bring things into this world from the collective past of Watepuapa. . . . When the gods and goddesses turned from the center of the world to disperse in the four directions, they noticed the tracks of Kauyumari were fuzzy green disks on the desert floor. They learned to ingest these disks and found themselves filled with Kupuri from the Sun, God’s light. They called these disks peyote. The Deer Spirit left them as tracks so those who come through the tunnel later will also be able to find their way, be filled with divine insight, and remember who they are and where they come from. – – http://www2.planeta.com
phallocentrism –
pharmaceutical – any substance which, injected into a rat, produces a scientific paper.
pharmacokinetics – ‘With respect to pharmacokinetics, all four FDA approved MAOIs are rapidly absorbed and have elimination half lives on the order of 1 to 4 hrs.’ (Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination – ADME).
pharmacognosy – Etymologically the term means ‘to know….the drug’.
pharmacophagus – Selective rationales (for what people are willing to ingest) can be looked at as similar to the pharmacophagus behavior characteristic of many animals. This touches on the author’s theory (Johns 1992) concerning the origin of medicines, that a diet high in allelochemicals is a sort of ‘self-medication’ strategy prior to the great and widening rift between food and medicines. The eating of bitter substances is therefore a cultural survival of dietary practices which compose a common human heritage. Rapidly changing cultural conditions have thrown the cues previously used to guide dietary choices into disarray.
pharmakeus – Greek for sorcerer, magician, shaman, whatever.
pheromone – any endogenous chemical secreted in minute amounts by an organism in order to elicit a particular reaction from another organism of the same species. Pheromones are widespread among insects and vertebrates but are unknown among birds. The chemicals may be secreted by special glands or incorporated in other substances, such as urine. They may be shed freely into the environment or deposited in carefully chosen locations. Pheromones are also used by some fungi, slime molds, and algae as attractants in reproduction; organisms of complementary reproductive cell types grow or move toward each other. Pheromones are widely used to promote aggregation. Among social insects such as termites and ants, several different pheromones may transmit the various messages needed to coordinate the complex activities of a colony. Some ants lay scent pheromones along a trail leading to a food source so that other members of the colony can find the food. Pheromones are also used to signal the presence of danger. A wounded minnow has been shown to release a chemical from specialized epidermal cells that elicits a dispersal response from the school. Pheromones play a role in sexual attraction and copulatory behavior, and they have been shown to influence the sexual development of many mammals as well as of insects such as termites and grasshoppers. Such pheromones tend to last relatively longer and extend farther distances than alarm pheromones. Aspects of vertebrate parent-young responses are often elicited by chemical stimuli. Entomologists use particular sex-attractant pheromones to lure and trap harmful insects. Pheromones may be involved in human sexual response. In testing human vaginal secretions, scientists have identified fatty acids identical to several that are presumed to act as sex pheromones in other primates. The human female’s sensitivity to musk like odors is greatest around the time of ovulation, which some researchers interpret as proof of the ancestral presence of a musky pheromone in the male. – britannica.com
pheromonal lock-on – the psychophysiological effects of being in Love. . . . ‘Our most sublime human relationships–when they fall into difficulty, we experience the condition of a broken heart., which looks–in terms of its presentation of symptoms–very much like junk withdrawal. Probably because it is, because there has been some kind of phermonal lock-on that has gone on because you’ve been hanging out with this person so much.’ – T. McKenna (at the Fez, ‘93)
phlebotomy – therapeutic (?) bleeding
philanthropist – The true philanthropist, the man who has the benefit and progress of his fellows most at heart, is the true man, the true child of the Almighty Father, who is the great Philanthropist. The true philanthropist is he who grows likest God every hour. He is enlarging by constant exercise the sympathies which are eternal and undying, and in the perpetual exercise of which man finds increasing happiness. The philanthropist and the philosopher, the man who loves mankind, and the man who loves knowledge for its own sake, these are God’s jewels of priceless value, and of boundless promise. The one, fettered by no restrictions of race or place, of creed or name, embraces in his loving heart the whole brotherhood of humanity. He loves them as friends, as brethren. He asks not what are their opinions, he only sees their wants, and in ministering to them progressive knowledge he is blest. This is the true philanthropist, though frequently the counterfeit, who loves those who think with him, and will help those who fawn on him, and give alms, so the generous deed be well known, robs the fair name of philanthropy of that all embracing beneficence which is the true mark. The other, the philosopher, hampered by no theories of what ought to be, and what therefore must be–bound by no subservience to sectarian opinion, to the dogmas of a special school, free from prejudice, receptive of truth, whatever that truth may be, so it be proven–he seeks into the mysteries of Divine wisdom, and, searching, finds his happiness. He need have no fear of exhausting the treasures, they are without end. His joy throughout life shall be to gather ever richer stores of knowledge, truer ideas of God. The union of those two–the philanthropist and the philosopher–makes the perfect man. Those who unite the two, progress further than spirits who progress alone. – Spirit Teachings
philosophy – 1) ‘capturing one’s time in thought,’ – Hegel. 2) the philosopher — is a terrible explosive, endangering everything – Nietzsche 3) If life is a journey, then philosophy is like a compass. It helps us to find our way through the jungle of possibilities that life presents. – Thomas Knierim
philter – a love potion or magic charm
phrased – ‘to have a differently phrased emotional independence . . ‘
physical reality~ vibrations of energy. a mirror of the energetic state of being that we choose to be in based on the beliefs that we hold to be true whether positive or negative . . it may be we choose to unconsciously hold to belief systems that create conditions that are out of alignment with who we truly are, and we therefore suffer the consequences. ~ Bashar 2) physical reality is a projection, a self-realization of one particular way we look at ourself. . physical reality is a mirror,, a reflection of whatever the strongest idea of yourself that you may hold to be true at any given moment. .Everything is made of light, and everything is a reflection of the light of your consciousness. . ~ Bashar
physics – Behind physics is the more ancient and honorable tradition of attempts to understand where the world came from, where it is going, and why. – P. J. E. Peebles
phytotherapy – “uses extracts from a single plant and closely follows the principles of pharmacology.”
pidgeon science –
pilgrimage to Wholeness –
pimping – And, after all, America is at home with pimping. America starts the wars that need the weapons, sells the weapons that fight the wars, it bottles the water that used to run free in the river behind your house, then sells it back to you for a profit, it withholds medication from the people who need it, while concocting illnesses that don’t exist, then sells you the fix…America can even package and sell you back your own problems on national TV – Ru Freeman
Pinealocytes – (cells of the piuneal gland) in many non-mammalian vertebrates have a strong resemblance to the photoreceptor cells of the eye. Some evolutionary biologists believe that the vertebrate pineal cells share a common evolutionary ancestor with retinal cells. – Klein D (2004). “The 2004 Aschoff/Pittendrigh lecture: Theory of the origin of the pineal gland—a tale of conflict and resolution”. J Biol Rhythms 19 (4): 264–79.
pit garden – You create a shallow pit four feet wide, six to 12 inches deep, where you put your seeds or plant, then you mulch it well. The depression will collect the water from the surrounding areas, and keep the bed damp, as opposed to raised beds, which have the tendency to dry out faster. I use the pit garden for plants that like more moisture, like mint, etc. – http://www.life.ca/nl/37/permaculture.html
placebo – [L., I shall please, fut. of placere to please.] 1. (R. C. Ch.) The first antiphon of the vespers for the dead. 2. (Med.) A prescription intended to humor or satisfy. ‘To sing placebo, to agree with one in his opinion; to be complaisant to.’ –Chaucer. 3) For V. Tyler, placebo is merely a psychological distortion of reality not an intrinsic element of the healing reflex.’ – Jon Treasure, Dishonest Herbal. pg. 19. 4) ‘Double blind studies, by overly limiting and simplifying the effects of a complex substance such as an herb, may fail to encompass the broader aspects of empowerment and suggestion that is too often denigrated as ‘placebo’. There is no escaping the fact that a highly significant fraction of the efficacy of any known drug is based on placebo’ Michael Tierra – History of herbs . . .
Planetarization – ‘Ecology does not recognize national borders, and planetarization demands that we create a restorative economy grounded in healthy ecosystems and job creation. It also calls upon us to celebrate the world’s rich diversity of cultures, and to forge a working community of nations committed to social justice.’ –Kenny Ausbel
planet dreamtime –
planetary grid – Planet Earth is undergoing a profound transformation process which is without precedent in human history. Referred to in nearly all religious doctrines and spiritual movements, this prophesied “Golden Age” can be simply described as a gradual elevation of all life to greatly expanded levels of conscious awareness. More specifically, Earth and her humanity are experiencing a cyclic evolutionary process of ascending from a consciousness paradigm based in duality and separation, to a more advanced level of conscious understanding which embodies the principles of inter-connectivity, love and compassion towards all sentient life form. World peace, unity consciousness and heart centered living will be the wondrous result. The planetary grid, a geodesic crystalline matrix, is a highly advanced, multidimensional energy system which serves as a transitory bridge between consciousness paradigms. Also referred to as the Unity Grid and the Grid of Christ Consciousness, this new earth structure serves as a spiritual “telecommunications system” to help people connect and remain connected to the higher consciousness of humans all over the world. By consciously aligning with and connecting to this grid in regularity and on a collective basis, participants are strengthening their ability to receive and transmit pure, divine energy as one synergistic beam of love and transforming power. The goal of the massive harmonic resonant field created through the planetary grid unification is to amplify the power of light on earth to such a degree that the resultant global shift in frequency will help eliminate major conflict and destructive force in and among our population and on earth. Moreover, this extraordinary field of unification creates an influential forcefield capable of healing and transforming the multitude and reaching into every area of the world. – www.childrenofthesun.tv
plant blindness – afflicts people who think plants only belong as a green background – Jodie Holt
plants – Plants transmit the vital-emotional impulses, the life-force that is hidden in light. That is the gift, the grace, the power of plants. They metabolize light. –The Yoga of Herbs 2) plants are, according to pharmaceutical companies: molecule factories. 3) plants are the umbilical cords to the planet – Rosemary Gladstar 3) rooted folk – David Abram
Plantworld – a carpet of intelligence
platform of experience – ‘Do we have a lot of background energy, noise, static, which is then our platform for experience. Does the noise trigger a response in our environment that attracts more noise to us, like a magnetic attraction? Or do we have a more positive emotional background that attracts like energies – we seek the latter, because it is the nature of human beings to seek more and more of the go/od vibration, though our addictions to lower vibrations may temporarily hold our attention.’ – Rick Phillips
play – a joker in the neuroanthropological deck. Play as liminal mode, essentially interstitial, betwixt and between all standard taxonomic modes, essentially elusive. V. Turner feels that play plays ‘a similar role in the social construction of reality as mutation and variation in organic evolution’. 2) creative acts that have no attachment to outcome. being creative for the purpose of being creative ~ ‘P’leiadians
plenum – a space or all space every part of which is filled with matter. Condition of fullness, being filled. Opposite of vacuum. ‘Drink of the plenum of existence.’
pluralizing identities – The self can act in/as another; the social or trans-individual self is a role or set of roles, a pluralizing of identities. Note that there are both evolutionary and pathologic dimensions to ‘pluralizing of identities’ and other such elements of the ‘hero’s journey’.
pluriforms – c.1978 Exegesis by Philip K. Dick. The belief that we are pluriforms of God voluntarily descended to this prison world, voluntarily losing our memory, identity and supernatural powers (faculties), all of which can be regained through anamnesis (Anamnesis is the closest that human minds can come to experiencing the freedom of the soul prior to its being encumbered by matter. The process of incarnation is described in Neoplatonism as a shock that causes the soul to forget its experiences (and often its divine origins as well), (or, sometimes, the mystical conjunction), is one of the most radical religious views known in the West. But it is known. It is regarded as the Great Blasphemy: replication of the original sin mentioned in the First Book of Adam and Eve and in Genesis. For this pride and aspiration (we are told by orthodoxy) our original fall and exile and punishment, our being taken from our home the gardenland and put into the prison, was inflicted on us. ‘They wish to be equal to – like – us,’ the Elohim say, and toss us down. Yet I have reason to believe that this, ‘the Great Satanic Blasphemy,’ is true. First, we are here voluntarily. We did not sin and we were not punished; we elected to descend. Why? To infuse the divine into the lowest strata of creation in order to halt its decomposing – the sinking of its lower realm. – http://www.deoxy.org/plurifrm.htm
pneuma – from the Greek: breath, wind, spirit.
poetry – the yoga of empathy – Michael Andrews 2) I always wanted to be a painter and a musician. I had the notion that, as poet, you can do both. You can paint with words, and you can have music in the language. I think you can. – Quincey Troupe
poison -. . . can always be defined in terms of relationship. It is that which is most difficult for the psychophysical being to handle. It challenges to the extreme, and therefore provides the most potential to break thru barriers to growth. The difference between poison, medicine, and food is often simply one of dosage. – mb 2) There are no toxic substance, only toxic doses.
politics – ‘for most people, it is merely a matter of listening to the news every night.’ 2) the continual struggle to gain authority for oneself and to evade subjection to the authority of others – Makowsky and Collins 3) conventional politics tend to be adversarial rather than integrative. 4) “Maybe you need to see where (the politics of your country) is within you; . . where the left is within you, where the right is within you and what you really want in relation to this. Perhaps we must realize what we feed with this division and with this dispute, this clash of who has the truth. My truth is better than yours. That is how this “self” thinks. We have to be careful not to demonize politics. Because genuine politics is an instrument to organize life in society.” ~ Prem Baba ~
political philosophy – political philosophy has to encompass not only an analysis of society and a set of theories of how it works, but ‘an ethic, an articulation of ideals.’ – C. Wright Mills
pop holism – holistic medical views marred by sloppy thinking or simple greed.
popularity – Popularity is kind of like Tupperware—Expensive plastic sold at parties
politics ~ . . there is a fundamental tone of resistance in the usual political discourse. For what you resist persists (resistance feeds, gives energy to, the potential you don’t want). . When you have a very strong stance against anything you are really voting for that thing. In contrast, your acceptance that that is their reality, will reflect back to them what they need to do to change the circumstances they do not like. The challenge for anyone encountering a hard political agenda is acceptance. . Big challenge to get past energy of resistance because a lot of energy has been put into something. . Noticing our own resistance to listening to things we don’t agree with, the tension, facing that with acceptance. . in otherwords focus less on the consequences of what you don’t agree with and more on the reaction in your body. . It is true that it is important to create balance and unification between races, genders, etc.. and the fundamental truth that we are all one is part of the equation, and the truth that there is trauma from oppressions is actually imbued in genetic material itself. . understanding this paradoxical truth will help both sides. . can’t use the argument that we are all one to deny struggle in places. . and cannot use the struggle to deny that beyond all concepts, all are the one energy. . the dance between realizing your individual expression and your expression as spirit will bring the greatest degree of change. Energy of love is more powerful than fear. So much so that when people come together in love, the fear that is around has to segregate itself, has to break up, fear does not unify people, it divides. When you stay present in love and hold love for those people ~ can do the ho’nponopono ~ can help us hold a space of love for such people, to dissolve the fear. When you are relaxed everything will work out because it is hard to have an argument with people who are relaxed. ~ Dante’s Pleiadians
politics of resentment – Right wing fundamentalist attacks on the success of the Sixties.
polypharmaceutical complexity – Herbalists have long viewed the multiple constituents of whole plant preparations as having synergistic properties that exceed the sum of the single constituents. In clinical practice real herbal prescriptions, whether time honoured elixirs or modern phytotherapeutic formulae are often compounded from many herbs, each with its innumerable active constituents, taking us into a world of polypharmaceutical complexity that is even further removed from the reductionist single constituent drug model of herb action. – Jon Treasure ‘Dishonest Herbal’
positive psychology – the enterprise of systematically studying positive huma nattributes and their cultivation.
positive state ~ We got to choose to stay in a positive state. . that allows us to stay on the frequency of inspiration, etc. . so if things happen that you objectively do not prefer, it is there for a reason to learn from. If you stay in the positive state you will figure out how that thing that you do not prefer can serve you. If things you don’t prefer stick around in your life, than you must refuse to believe that they don’t belong there.. ~ Bashar
posology – The science or doctrine of doses; dosology.
possession – Few people yet in their earthly envelopes understand that spirits can, and very often do, take such complete possession of the bodies of mortal men and women that, for the time, it is as though that earth body belonged to the disembodied and not the embodied spirit. Many cases of so-called temporary madness are due to the controlling power of very low spirits of evil desires or frivolous minds, who are, through the weakness of will or other causes, put into complete rapport with the embodied spirit whose body they seek to use. Amongst many ancient races this fact was acknowledged and studied as well as many branches of the occult sciences which we of the nineteenth century have grown too wise, forsooth, to look into, even to discover, if we can, those germs of truth with which all ages have been blessed and which are worth disinterring from the mass of rubbish in which succeeding generations of men have buried them. – Franchezzo
Positional goods – ‘. . .So why the ceaseless search for stuff? In a word, competition. It’s worth it to stay ahead in the rat race. Researchers have asked people which they would prefer: a world in which they made $50,000 but everyone else made half that; or one in which they made $100,000 and everyone else made twice that (prices are the same in both worlds). The majority preferred the first world. They happily would make less money, as long as everyone else made even less money. Surveys have returned similar results for houses. Most individuals prefer a smaller house in a world where their neighbors have even smaller houses to a bigger house in a world where their neighbors have even bigger houses. Winning the competition is more important than having a yard, it turns out. Which is why economists call these “positional goods” — goods whose worth is deeply tied into their position vis-a-vis your direct “competitors”(which is to say neighbors, friends, etc.). – Ezra Klein
power – ‘Power, the energy which suffuses the universe, is the source of order and fertility, both of which are expressions of power. As Anderson (1972:19) puts it: The two fundamental ideas behind these conventional images [of the ideal kingdom] are creativity (fertility-prosperity) and harmony (tranquility-order) . . . Both fertility and order are simply expressions of Power. Power is the ability to give life. Power is also the ability to maintain a smooth tautness and to act like a magnet which aligns scattered iron filings in a patterned field of force. There is thus a close relationship between the notions of power and order. Spiritual practices which place a person or group in contact with that power, the divine force that animates the universe, will enhance the ability of that person or group to affect the generation and maintenance of order. – (in) Lyon, M. 1990 ‘Concept of Order . . . . ‘, pg. 251. 2) Manifestation. 3) Qualities of power define difference between chiefs (secular, etiquette, exemplary, models for cultural behavior), and shamans (wild like the wilderness, uncultured, or maybe transcultured). 4) A closely related theme is the myth of a life-giving tree or other healing magical plant, growing in paradise or some other inaccessible place, to which the culture hero must travel in order to gain a boon for mankind. S/he is frequently assisted by or has to overcome supernatural animals. This is an especially widespread type of myth, with numerous instances found throughout the world. Some species (e.g., animals such as the serpent and various narcotic plants) exhibit the ambivalence of the sacred–they are conceived as being both beneficent and dangerous. This reflects a crucial aspect of the sacred—that it is a region of power. This power is ambivalent–i.e., it can act for mankind’s benefit or detriment–and is perceived therefore as the location either of creativity or of chaos. – mb 5) Power is a test of character, and the power is yours. –Pleiadians 6) ‘Thoughts are power and all men are gardeners of their thoughts, and that the garden needs constant care and weeding. The owning of real personal power is seen in those who care for their gardens with tenderness and vigilance. – This from Alfred’s client account 6) power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.” – MLK 7) True power is that which heals – Caroline Casey
power naps – best way to enjoy your day is to take a power nap every day. – Svevo Brooks.
power stories – ‘shamans are always looking for powerful metaphors, from any source, in order to carry out their work . . they are always looking for power stories . . ‘ – E. Luna
Prakriti – (from Sanskrit language प्रकृति, prakṛti) means “nature”. It is, according to Hindus, the basic nature of intelligence by which the Universe exists and functions. It is described in Bhagavad Gita as the “primal motive force”. It is the essential constituent of the universe and is at the basis of all the activity of the creation. It is composed of the three gunas which are tendencies or modes of operation, known as sattva (preservation), rajas (creation), and tamas, (destruction). –Wikipedia
Prajna ~ (Buddhism) Wisdom, understanding, discernment or cognitive acuity. Such wisdom is understood to exist in the universal flux of being and can be intuitively experienced through meditation. ~ Wikipedia 2) In Sanskrit, jñā can be translated as “consciousness”, “knowledge”, or “understanding” (pobably the same jñā that constructs the Hindu concept jñāna.)’. Pra is an intensifier which could be translated as “higher”, “greater”, “supreme” or “premium”.
pratikpaksha bhavanam – I shall begin this story with words you never want to hear: I had the weirdest dream last night….But here goes: George W. Bush was President of the United States. (You may not want to hear those words either). It was September 12, 2001. He stood before the gashed earth that was the Twin Towers and made the world wide proclamation: “This is a GREAT opportunity for love. We shall exemplify the Christian principles-the principles of all great spiritual traditions and employ compassion. We shall love our enemies. We shall love our Muslim brothers and share in our injured humanity. This event will be the beginning of the healing.” And then he began singing the Youngblood’s song, “Come on people now, smile on your brother. Everybody get together, try and love one another right now.” BIZARRE! I KNOW!! But then the dream continued to unfold as the reverberations of these words were made manifest. The earth literally blossomed. I will not go into grisly detail about the flowers and rainbows and hand holding and singing. Hunger was a thing of the past and the word “war” was a fiction! And there was more. Much more. Now it’s possible that in one of the other dimensions this has taken place. But whatever. We’re sharing certain aspects of a dimension right now that does not include George W. singing “Come on People Now.”\ What my sleeping mind was doing is called in yoga parlance pratikpaksha bhavanam, or cultivating the opposite state of mind. Desikachar’s student Bernard Bouchand translates Patanjali’s Sutra 2:34 as this: ‘When harassed by doubt, cultivate the opposite mental attitude (pratikpaksha bhavanam)’. – http://www.loka-oakland.blogspot.com/
prayer – 1) The feeling body can tune to subtle dimensions of energy, or spirit, which is shared by all beings. This is done by shifting, or altering consciousness – very much like turning a radio dial. Eg: all possibilities that the radio can dial into go on simultaneously, its just that one is selected, or magnified, over the others. The more subtler the dimensions become that you attune to, the more dreamlike, and the more they operate thru metaphors, thru analogies, thru poetics. When this tuning is done with strong intentionality, it is often called prayer. Rituals are done to intensify prayer, to give form to prayer, meditations, and other spiritual communications which shape religious experience. – mb 2) ‘We tend to think that the purpose of prayer (or healing) is to terminate sickness, but we forget that the purpose of sickness may be to initiate prayer, or, more generally, a consciousness of the infinite. – Brad Lemley. 3) ‘prayer comes from the spontaneous desire of the personality to seek alignment with, or protection or guidance from, some higher power or spirit. Prayer can take many forms, from the innocent expression of a sincere wish to a complex and elaborate ritual of evocation. As our spiritual evolution progresses, prayer evolves from a simple petition to a higher power viewed as outside the self into a means for issuing requests deep into our own creative soul substance, while evoking the help of universal powers. Like meditation, prayer is a path of surrender of the little ego to the greater energies of life. But where meditation is more receptive and quiet, prayer is directed towards some goal in a more active engagement of divinity. For me . . the ultimate prayer is aligning individual ego and purpose to the larger design of God is. ‘Not thy will, but thine be done.’ –susan thesenga 5) there is nothing more productive than prayer – pathwork 17 6) all things come by earnest prayer, whether you are conscious that you pray or not. For good or for evil, your desires are as prayers and call around you good or evil powers to answer them for you – Franchezzo 7) To ask for spiritual guidance and support. 8) Real prayer is when we pray without ego. The ego should be kept away, for only then are real prayers possible. And real prayers must be answered. A real prayer will never contain any suggestions, instructions, or demands. The sincere devotee will simply say, “Oh Lord, I do not know what is good or what is bad for me. I am nobody – nothing. You know everything. I know whatever you do must be for the best; therefore, do as you wish.” In real prayer you bow down, surrender, and declare your helplessness to the Lord. – Amma (AC V) 8) If we can remember that the intention is to promote life and harmony and peace, and realize that every prayer, no matter how anybody’s doing it, is creating a healing energy field in the world. Again, when we let go of the form we can see how we’re unified. The unity comes from our shared intention: The bottom line intention of all the prayers is wanting life to continue in a good way. In experiencing the place of unity of intention, we heal divisions of form. We need to stop focusing on how we’re different, and start focusing on how we’re the same. That we’re actually together creating a field of healing for the earth. 9) Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at his disposition, and listening to his voice in the depths of our hearts. –mother teresa 10) The word, which is often translated simply as prayer, means literally’wish-path’ (Tibetan: smon-lam). It is not a request to an external deity, but a method of purifying and directing the mind. It acts as inspiration by arousing the mind’s inherent desire for good, which attracts the fulfillment of its aim. – the tibetan book of the dead 11) The bottom line intention of all the prayers is wanting life to continue in a good way – Barrios (Mayan) 12) the most powerful form of prayer is to put your gifts and talents at service of love. – Prem Baba
pretense – sickly exaggerations
PPL – On July 7, 1994, I opened the HEMP BC retail store and began a decade of principled, purposeful lawbreaking, with every action aimed at ending the marijuana prohibition by any peaceful means possible. – Marc Emery
pride ~ Pride is the illusion that “I” am the Doer. “I” am the cause of something happening. It comes from an imbalance in the ether element, and it is probably the most difficult challenge for a human being to overcome. – Ek Ong Kaar Kaur Khalsa
primal coherence – deep structure
primary process – ‘ . . . this then segues into speculations about the need for trans formative experience, for revelation.’ Seems, in Ehrenzweig’s language, many people feel the need to experience primary process.

processing memories – ‘ Both Western psychotherapy and shamanism recognize that individuals may inherent problematic or neurotic complexes from our parents. Most forms of Western psychotherapy focus on understanding how those complexes were passed down to us by our parents and ancestors. In some Western forms of psychology, such as Gestalt therapy, people are encouraged to dialogue with their inner parents and with their complexes as if these were entities. They may work metaphorically with ancestral energies, but they don’t usually think that they can consciously talk with deceased ancestors. In contrast, during one ibogaine session, a friend of mine had a vivid vision of his two grandfathers, whom he had never met in this life. They sat down together and had a long talk, just as someone might do with a living grandfather. He knew without a doubt that they were his grandfathers, and they knew him. Such a vision goes beyond processing memories and allows one to understand oneself and one’s parents in ways that might otherwise be impossible. When you do shamanic work—whether you are working with psychedelics or not— you realize that these shamanic realms exist all the time. The spirits can talk to you anytime. They can talk to you over the breakfast table or while you are driving down the freeway—and they will, if you are open to them and you ask them for help’. – – R. Metzner. Shaman’s Drum, (51) 1999
progress – the art of progress is to preserve order amid change, and change amid order – Alfred North Whitehead
projection – (Freudian) A defense mechanism by which we seek to deal with our own weaknesses by projecting them on to another and then ruthlessly criticizingthem.
propaganda – Foucault exposes prominent cultural notions like ‘normal’, ‘healthy’, ‘good’, ‘right’ and ‘proper’ as propaganda terms for imposing a bourgeois (rationalized) system of order on society.
property – the intersection of self, space, and time, as mediated by a political system.
Prophecy – training to work on the a priori dimensions of individual and social change, before it is downloaded into society. Those close to the numinous , such as artists, and nearly crazy people get the download early and birth it into society where it is then seized upon and eventually institutionalized. – mb 2) an expanded sensitivity to the implications of the present – William Irwin Thompson 3) a tuning into the intentions of the Gaian Mind. 4) The ancient Greeks believed that people under the influence of certain herbs became prophetic, and the priestesses of the Oracle of Delphi are claimed to have inhaled the smoke from smouldering henbane.
prophet – A shaman raised to a higher power, thereby functionally exponentiated to encompass the diagnoses and prescriptive destinies of social bodies, races, and often extending to the entire human species. – m.b. 2) ‘Prophets were an integral part of the American Indian past, and the prophets played a powerful role in the Indian Communities of N. America.’ – Clifford Trafzer. 3) That which is created when strong visionary experiences are accompanied by imperatives for human conduct. The impression left by the prophet on this plane are symbolized in cultural stories. The telling of these stories are bridges to the experience. The art of the storyteller is therefore to bring the listener in resonance with the experience that drives the symbols . . – mb 4) ‘Thus, then, it is in pity to his wandering, struggling children that God has in these later days opened once more–and wider than ever before–the doors of communion between the two worlds. He is sending out again messengers to warn man, ambassadors, to tell him of the better way, the truer path to the happiness of a higher life, and to show him that knowledge and that power which shall yet be of right his inheritance. As the prophets of old spake, so speak these messengers now, and if they speak with clearer voice, with less veiled metaphor, it is because man is no longer in his infancy and needs now that he should be shown the reason and the science upon which his beliefs and hopes must be founded. –Franchezzo
protean – 1. Displaying considerable variety or diversity. 2. Readily assuming different shapes or forms. Protean is derived from Proteus, an ancient Greek god who had the ability to change his shape at will.
protective shield – Anthropologists have noted that a further societal function of these churches (vision-plant using) is to provide a protective shield of traditional lore against the encroachments of Christian missionaries and the seductions of Western consumer culture. – Metzner, R. – 1999
psyche – The soul; the vital principle; the mind; that which is responsible for one’s thoughts and feelings; the seat of the faculty of reason; the immaterial part of a person; the actuating cause of an individual life; (Greek mythology) a beautiful princess loved by Cupid who visited her at night and told her she must not try to see him; became the personification of the soul. (dict.)
psychic healing – the ability to manipulate symptoms with the mind from a distance – Jane Katra
psycho-hygienic; dystonic – ‘Following the invasion of missionaries and the introduction of Western medicine as well as state prohibitions on the use of hallucinogens, one finds that the loss of those hallucinogenic rituals contributes to the process of disintegration of native cultures, and dystonic (opposite of ‘tonic’)effects for the individual as well. Art, myth, tradition, and social group cohesion are all affected. The individual now lacks an effective psychohygienic ritual that previously functioned to reinforce his/her personal identity. – Andritzky 1988
psycho-integrators – the reptilian and paleomammalian brains information-processing modalities involve cognitive processes that are not based on language, but on forms of mental and social reprsentation tied to primary processing and nonverbal communication. these structures lack linguistic representation; but they have awareness, intelligence, and consciousness; play a predominant role in managing emotional and social life. . . One effect of psychointegrators (aka as teacher plants and their chemistries) is to shut down the habitual routines related to social behavior displays. The psychointegrators apparently have the effect of forcing the frontal cortex to consciousnely process information that has been relegated or automatized by the R-complex and paleomammalian brain. – M. Winkelman, 2000, pg. 222
psycho-spiritual – deep psychological work can lead to spirituality and that genuine spiritual work will touch on the human psychological sphere. This translates, therefore into a psycho-spiritual approach, a link between science and spirituality.

public intellectual – ‘This year, on the centenary of Mead’s birth, Barnard College is proud to sponsor a celebrator conference that assembles some of today’s most accomplished scholars in anthropology. Like Mead’s, their work allows them to engage in today’s most pressing social issues as both academic critics and public advocates. The panelists will challenge assumptions about race and class; chart the ever-changing landscape of gender politics; delineate the roles and responsibilities of the public intellectual; explore the visual media’s impact on culture; and debunk the supposed neutrality of scientific paradigms, especially as it relates to reproductive health.’
pulsation – pulsation, between knowing and not knowing, stability and opening, attention and action, shows up here as the everyday flow. – Michael Herman
purification – There is nothing in the human soul that comes entirely from the higher self or the lower self, because everything mixes constantly. Purification means to separate, understand, and rearrange in conscious understanding all these various trends, thus purifying the basic good trends from all masks of self-deception and from influences caused by character weaknesses. The higher self in you says, ‘I want to be perfect. I know this is the will of God.’ But it is the ignorance of the lower self that makes you think perfection can be attained by turning away from your imperfections and disregarding them. It is also the lower self that always wants to have everything so comfortable. The lower self wants to be in a high position, but for different reasons than the higher self. Your higher self seeks to advance for the love of God by way of recognition and enlightenment, aware that only when you are perfect will you be truly capable of loving your fellow creatures. But your lower self wants to be perfect in order to have more ego-gratification and to swell its head, to be admired. All of you, without exception, also feel this way. Here is an example where both the higher and the lower self want the same thing, but their motives are entirely different. It is of utmost importance for the purification of your personality and for the sake of a healthy and harmonious soul to separate these motives and to recognize their voices. – http://www3.sympatico.ca/roddy.duchesne/lecture_25.htm 2) Through this questioning process you liberate the repressed feelings that sustain negative patterns. An alchemical transmutation occurs: pride transforms into humility, lust into devotion, and fear into trust. The transmutation and integration of these personality distortions is the meaning of the word purification. – Prem Baba
purification therapies –
Puritanism – not so much an organized system as a religious temper and a moral force. – J. Brown 2) The immigration of the Pilgrims to New England occurred in stages. But that they had to go somewhere became apparent soon enough. Theirs was the position of the Separatist: they believed that the reforms of the Anglican church had not gone far enough, that, although the break with Catholicism in 1535 had moved some way toward the Puritan belief in and idea of religious authority grounded solely in Scripture, by substituting king for pope as the head of the church, England was only recapitulating an unnecessary, corrupt, and even idolatrous order (Gill, 19-21). In one basic respect, the Pilgrims are a logical outcome of the Reformation. In its increasing dissemination of the Bible, the increasing emphasis on it as the basis of spiritual meaning, the subsequently increasing importance of literacy as a mode of religious authority and awareness, a growing individualism was implicit. This individualism may then have easily led to an atomization or dispersion of authority that the monarchy duly feared, and that later generations of Americans could easily label democratization. As a writer in 1921 put it, ‘They accepted Calvin’s rule, that those who are to exercise any public function in the church should be chosen by common voice’ (Wheelwright, vii). However much this might emphasize the democratic qualities of the Pilgrims, as dissenters they do suggest at some level the origins of democratic society, in its reliance upon contending and even conflicting points of view, and in its tendency toward a more fluid social structure. – http://xroads.virginia.edu/~CAP/puritan/purhist.html
pulse extinctions – inferred from the fossil record, this describes the rhythmic dynamic of the biological concept of ‘punctuated equilibrium’.
Pyramidal societies – opposite of those that practice ‘council ways’
pyrogen – <cell biology> Substance or agent that produces fever. The major endogenous pyrogen in mammals is probably interleukin-1.
pytheroids – We are really at the beginning of a very complicated journey to understand the thousands of substances we are exposed to,’ said Thomas Burke, associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The discovery of pyrethroids in most people is especially important, as no one had looked for them in the human body before. Pyrethroids are synthetic versions of natural compounds found in flowers, and they have been considered safer than older pesticides, such as DDT and chlordane, that build up in the environment and have been banned in the United States. But in high doses, pyrethroids are toxic to the nervous system. They are the second most common class of pesticides that result in poisoning. At low doses, they might alter hormones. The compounds are used in large volumes in farm and household pesticides and are sprayed by public agencies to kill mosquitoes. Pyrethroids ‘were a step forward [from DDT and other banned pesticides], but now we’re beginning to understand that while they don’t persist in the environment, many of us are exposed,’ Burke said. ‘We don’t quite know what those levels mean.’
